Deepavali, popularly known as the "festival of lights", is an important festival in Hinduism, celebrated for different reasons, occurring between mid-October and mid-November.

The word "Deepavali" is a combination of the words ‘Dipa’ ...and ‘Gavali’, the former meaning ‘light’ and the latter meaning ‘a row’. Thus symbolizing the rows of lights that can be seen at the houses of Hindu celebrants. As light dispels darkness, this festival symbolizes the victory of good over evil.

It's a day of festive joy and Malaysians visit their friends of Hindu faith to extend good wishes and to partake in the feasting and jollity. At the same time, they will enjoy numerous traditional cakes and sweets for the day, among them are "murukku", "omopadi", "athirrsam", "achi murukku", "laddu" and "mysore pahu".

Last but not least, it was very interesting to know about the various festivals in Malaysia right? but in this happiness let us not forget about personal safety, especially children. If possible, refrain from letting off firecrackers because it is dangerous and will graze our happiness.

CCTV for Taiping hot spots Govt to install 20 cameras at selected points by year end

TAIPING (Thestar) - The Government has approved the installation of 20 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in crime-prone areas to help fight crime in the Taiping district.

Deputy Home Minister Datuk Lee Chee Leong said police had identified the sites and all the CCTV cameras would be installed by this year.

“In addition, more streetlights will be erected in dark alleys to prevent crimes of opportunity.

“Areas which are prone to snatch thefts will also be upgraded with the construction of pavements to prevent motorcyclists from getting near pedestrians and snatching their belongings,” he said after attending a closed-door briefing on the crime situation in the district recently.

Also present were Perak deputy police chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Zakaria Yusof and Taiping OCPD Asst Comm Yusof Mohd Diah.

“The police view public complaints seriously and will do their best to allay the fear of the people.

“All reports will be investigated and police will also take proactive measures in fighting crime, in line with the Safe Township concept,” he said.

He said army personnel and policemen in uniform would be deployed to patrol the streets of Ipoh and Taiping, which recorded the most number of felony cases.

Six army personnel, he said, would conduct rounds with policemen during peak hours at strategic locations such as commercial areas to check crime.

Lee, who is also the Kampar MP, noted that there was a reduction in crime cases last year as compared to 2009.

He said the district had succeeded in reducing the crime index by 5.2% and street crimes by 18% for the whole of last year.

Ipoh will have 100 CCTVs installed by 2012 to curb crime

IPOH (Thestar) - Ipoh City Council is putting up 38 more closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras to watch over the city as part of its crime prevention initiatives.

These cameras will be installed by end of the year and another 38 will be put up next year.

Perak Local Government Committee chairman Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon said the camera surveillance system was part of the state government’s on-going crime prevention programme.

“The surveillance system had been found to be effective in reducing the city crime rate,” he said.

Dr Mah said the government decided to boost the number of the surveillance cameras in the city after they found the first batch of the 24 CCTVs installed five months ago had helped them in fighting crime.

“The local council had helped the police, National Anti-Drug Agency and State Religious Department solved 31 crime related cases.

“The installation of the CCTV cameras had paid off. It is an effective way to keep an eye on crime.

“It has assisted the local council in reducing the crime rate at the vicinity where the cameras were installed. Aside from assisting the police, the video footages taken from the CCTVs had also helped to curb immoral activities, illegal hawkers, illegal parking attendants and vandalism,” he added.

Perak police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mohd Shukri Dahlan said the surveillance system had helped them bring down the crime rate in Ipoh city.

“The CCTVs provide 24-hour live-feed to the council’s enforcement office and also to the Ipoh district police headquarters,” he said.

By the end of 2012, Dr Mah said the city would have 100 CCTVs installed in and around Ipoh.

The Housing and Local Government Ministry paid RM2.7mil for the first batch of CCTVs.

The cost of the other 76 CCTVs will be borne by the local council. It will cost between RM2,500 and RM3,000 to install each.

Dr Mah said the government had decided to invest in putting up the CCTVs to ensure Ipoh is a safe city to live in.

The public, however, has mixed feelings about the effectiveness of the CCTVs.

Kinta Heights resident Hari Singh, 64, said the CCTV installed at the council flat had not done much to reduce petty thefts and motorcycle thefts.

Instead, he said, they have to hire guards to watch over their flat.

Another resident, who declined to be named, said although the CCTVs had helped the flat dwellers to behave, it does not completely stop them from throwing rubbish from their units.

He added unscrupulous flat dwellers would throw rubbish down from an angle that cannot be captured by the CCTV.

However, he noticed there had been a significant decrease of couples using the field at night as their love nest.

A 75-year-old jogger who only wanted to be known as Leong said there has also been a decrease in cars being broken into at the Sultan Abdul Aziz recreational park or better known as Polo Ground since the CCTVs were installed.

Kacang putih seller R. Chandran, 54, felt the surveillance cameras had played a significant role in reducing the crime rate at the park.

“There are less robberies, mugging and vehicle break-ins now. I think the criminals are wary and had avoided the park as they knew the area are being watched,” he said.

24 new CCTV cameras installed, 58 more awaiting approval

PENANG (Thestar) - About one third of Penang Island roads and intersections are now the coverage of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras.

State Local Government and Traffic Management Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow said this was made possible with an additional 24 cameras from the Housing and Local Government Ministry.

“With these additional CCTV cameras, Penang island now has a total of 56 cameras”.

“The 24 new cameras, which cost RM2.87mil to install, became operational on March 31,” he said when giving reporters a tour of the Penang Integrated Public Safety Command Centre in Komtar.

He said in a joint effort with the police, MPPP had previously installed 31 cameras in crime hotspots and these cameras had been operational since February 2008.

MPPP engineering department senior engineer A. Rajendran said the council had installed one more camera on Jalan Sungai earlier this year, with two more planned for the Komtar bus terminal in August.

The areas covered by the 24 new cameras include the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway, Jalan Air Itam, Jalan Boundary, Weld Quay, Queensbay Mall, Several areas in the Free Industrial Zone in Bayan Lepas, Bayan Baru, Tanjuung Tokong, Tanjung Bungah and Batu Ferringhi.

Rajendran said the new cameras were connected using fibre optics, unlike the previous cameras that ran on a 4.9GHz broadband wireless system.

“The picture from the fibre optics is much sharper and with the cameras able to turn 360 degrees horizontally, as well as 90 degrees vertically, we get a very good picture of what is happening on the street,” he said.

Such footages, he added, had helped police detect crimes and accidents as well as settle traffic disputes.

Chow added that the state was still waiting for a reply from the Federal Government on an additional 58 CCTV cameras that they had requested under the National Result Areas programme in 2009.

“Out of these 58 cameras, 36 are proposed for the island while the other 22 will cover Seberang Prai,” he added.

Police to Issue Summons With Photo of Vehicle Starting May 1

KUALALUMPUR, April 28 (Bernama) -- From May 1, police will issue summonses photographsof vehicles violating traffic regulations in areas monitored by closed-circuittelevision.

DeputyInspector General of Police Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar said Thursday that the newprocedure would be used for all traffic offences, including speeding andfailure to use seat belts.

Heexpects the new procedure to leave little chance of mistaken identity.

"But,if there are still people who claim that police have got the wrong vehicle(even with a picture attached to the summons), they should produce evidence ofthe mistake at any traffic counter," he told reporters here.

Inareas without CCTV, summonses will be issued as usual by traffic officers,Khalid said.

TheDeputy IGP also said that stern action would be taken against any policepersonnel found to have refused to accept a report from a member of the public.

Khalidsaid the top police management had received many complaints about policemen andofficers refusing to take reports from the public.

Hesaid this errant behavior was discussed in the Delivery Task Force meetingchaired by Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin in PutrajayaThursday.

Khalidtold the public that the next time a policeman refused to take their report,they should note his number.

Thereare many cases involve CCTV Camera and lightning danger. To protect the CCTVCamera, the customers should now the surgeprotector.

Whatis surge protector? Surgeprotector is an appliance designed to protect electrical devices fromvoltage spikes. A surge protector attemptsto limit the voltage supplied to an electric device by either blocking or byshorting to ground any unwanted voltages above a safe threshold.

Theterms of Surge Protection Device (SPD) isused to describe the electrical devices typically installed in powerdistribution panels, process control system, communication systems, and otherheavy-duty industrial system, for the purpose of protecting against electricalsurges and spikes, including those caused by lightning. How to be safe from lightning?

Believe thatthere are many Point-of-Dangers (PoDs) and this PoDs can affect the CCTV systemin a bad way;
Learn where theCCTV system are located and do something beforehand, because while indoors, youwill not be aware of impending dangers from lightning;
If you are awareof impending dangers from lightning, do not go near any PoD! There is no safe-time to unplug anything.

Do something right beforehand:

Isolate each CCTVsystem from induced lightning surges, with lightning isolators (surge protectordevice)!
Do not go near any CCTV system whilebare-footed! Wear rubber sandals or stand on dry and insulated floor-mat orEqual Potential Safety Mat (EPSM), if you have one installed;
Useremote-control, if possible;
Be warned:INSURANCE is not a safety-measure! It is a cut-loss measure, often associatedwith dangers that could not be technologically avoided. Lightning dangers areavoidable, now!

How to create Safe-Island for your CCTV system?

Identify all CCTVequipment in a setup and all must draw power from one and the same power surgeprotector only;
Identify all theconnections from this island to outside the CCTV system or to another island(including earth or ground wire, if any);

THIRTEEN areas in Klang will be installed with CCTV cameras to monitor crime, traffic flow and natural disasters round the clock.

The CCTV cameras will be installed in busy streets, shopping malls, commercial centres, traffic light junctions and housing estates.

Klang Municipal Council president Datuk Mislan Tugiu said the move was aimed at checking various problems including traffic woes and crime.

“We have a control centre at our office to monitor these areas round the clock.

“The CCTVs will enable us to check the traffic situation including congestion and road accidents, crime as well as natural disasters such as floods or landslides in these areas,’’ he said during a visit to the control room.

Mislan said the council was working closely with the police and that the local authority would be alerted when a crime occurred at a particular spot.

“We can also send in our team to ease traffic congestion or help police in their operation when the need arises,’’ he said.

Mislan said the CCTV cameras were installed under the Housing and Local Government Ministry programme.

He said the council’s Communications and Public Complaints Department would monitor the control centre after office hours.

“This way, the control room and the I-reponz team will be working more closely,’’ he said.

Council communications and public complaint director Norfiza Mahfiz said the public would be able to get better service through the integration of the control room and the hotline.

“It will help our team to have a clear idea of the situation on the ground, especially if the complaints come from the areas that have been installed with the CCTV cameras.

The Road Transport Department (R.T.D.), it is said will initiate the use of cameras soon. These cameras would be installed at all traffic junctions in Malaysia. It is intended to deter indisciplined motorists from doing dangerous stunts as beating red traffic lights.

The Road Transport Department cannot allow Malaysians to continue to behave in such manner. Foreigners have a very bad impression of Malaysian drivers as a whole.

Malaysia’s accident rate ranks amongst the highest in the world. It’s number three, behind China and India. The R.T.D. has to redeem the standard of Malaysian drivers. With this in mind, the R.T.D. has finally decided to implement the cameras in its Automated Enforcement System (A.E.S.) soon.

The role of CCTVs today in our country is indeed immense. The R.T.D., according to its Minister, Datuk Ong Tee Kiat, is scheduled to launch the A.E.S. program anytime now in September 2010 throughout the country.

With this system at all traffic lights junction, R.T.D. will fix surveillance cameras to deter indisciplined motorists from doing wrong things like beating red traffic lights and so forth.

KOTA BARU: The education ministry encourages all schools to install closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in a bid to curb disciplinary problems, including gangsterism, among students.

Director-General of Education Tan Sri Alimuddin Mohd Dom said the installation of the CCTV cameras was a very good initiative to monitor the behaviour of students while they were in the school compound.

"If the schools have their own financial resources to install CCTV cameras, we encourage them to do so," he told reporters after opening the 49th National Secondary School Principals Education Management Conference 2010 here today.

However, he said the ministry did not have a specific allocation for the purpose.

"As we all know, the installation of the CCTV camera is costly because we cannot have only one camera to cover all areas of the school. I was made to understand that several schools which had installed the CCTV cameras had done so at their own expense," he said.

On the student found dead due to a miscarriage at a resort in Pantai Cahaya Bulan, two days ago, Alimuddin said the ministry had received a report from the Kelantan Education Department on the incident.

Earlier in his speech, Alimuddin reminded principals and headmasters to maintain cordial relations with parents.

He said he received numerous complaints on the attitude of principals and headmasters, some to the extend of chasing out parents out of school compound.

"I don't know how far this is true but it is important to maintain cordial relations with parents as well as with students.

"They should instill respect, not fear, among students and subordinates," he said, adding that school authorities should also view seriously the issue of security in school.

JKJR TO INSTALL 1,000 CCTV BY SEPT TO NAB TRAFFIC OFFENDERS

KUALA LUMPUR - More than 1,000 Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras would be installed on roads throughout the country to nab traffic offenders said Road Safety Department Director Datuk Suret Singh.

Suret Singh said the installation of CCTVs would be carried out in stages from May, with the installation of such CCTV cameras at 10 locations in Perak and Selangor.

JKJR will install more CCTV at selected places troughout the country.

We hope that this action will reduce the accidents and reduce the traffic offenders in Malaysia.

“We are going to fix more than 1,000 CCTVs at selected locations throughout the country, especially at traffic lights and to curb speed violation among the road users,” he told reporters after signing a Memorandum of Understanding between JKJR and Tamil daily, Makkal Osai.

Suret Singh said JKJR was focused on pursuing a recommendation to build special lanes for motorcycles which can reduce fatalities involving motorcyclists and pillion riders by 85 per cent.

He said road accidents, especially those involving motorcyclists has been increasing due to the lack of special lanes for motorcycles.

“Most road accidents in our country involves motorcyclists because they don’t have a proper lane for the motorcycles and since there are no special lanes, most of them misuse their rights by riding on main roads.

“For now we are focusing on the need to build proper motorcycle lanes and we will make sure such lanes are build as soon as possible,” he said.

He added that poor road conditions and mechanical problems have also been identified as contributing factors for the increase in number of accidents.

“According to a survey carried out by JKJR, 30 per cent of the accidents are caused by mechanical problems, 30 per cent due to road conditions and 40 per cent human error,” said Suret Singh.

UTM develops CCTV that can record images in the dark

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has developed a closed circuit television (CCTV) camera system which can produce clear and accurate images even in the dark.

The system, developed by the university's Photogrammetry and Laser Scanning Research Group headed by Prof Dr Zulkepli Majid of the Faculty of Geoinformation Science and Engineering, has the potential to be the best crime monitoring system.

Developed from the idea of Mohd Farid Mohd Ariff, 30, one of the 16 researchers in the group, it is an integration of modern imaging technology and geomatics, said Dr Zulkepli.

"The system involves three primary components -- gathering of data offline and online, space calibration and data processing," he told reporters at the university in Skudai.

He said the camera integrated three digital imaging technologies, namely high-resolution video camera, near infra-red filter and 3D stereo adapter, which could record 3D images in a bright or dark environment.

The space calibration component is a 3D calibration adapter used to calibrate space which would be recorded by the closed circuit camera, he said.

The data processing component identifies the image through the photogrammetry method which gives accurate and fast measurement of the subject in physical terms such as height, condition and form of the face, he added.

Dr Zulkepli said the research on the system took two years and the effectiveness of the system was tested from all angles.

He said the market price of the CCTV system was RM60,000, much higher than the normal CCTV camera, but its capacity to produce fast and accurate images was significant.

"We are trying to commercialise the CCTV system through the TechnoFund grant of the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry," he said, adding that it was being targeted for areas which were dark or without lighting.

MACC proposed special room equipped with CCTV for witness

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is proposed to create a special room for the examination of witnesses and recording the statement, which has equipment of closed circuit television (CCTV), so the investigation can be carried comfortably.

MACC also need to identify and specify criteria for defining the inquiry in terms of time setting, convenience of witnesses and officers without interrupt the investigations.

The proposed improvements are among the eight recommendations contained in inspection reports of death related inquiry procedure Teoh Beng Hock, MACC Complaints Committee, chaired by former Court of Appeal Judge Datuk Mohd Noor Abdullah.

Complaints Committee established to monitor the handling of complaints regarding misconduct against the MACC officers, as well as to identify weaknesses in procedures that may cause complaints; and make recommendations on work procedures, if deemed fit and proper.

The report also suggested that the investigation look into the factor of health, comfort and safety of witnesses and the responsibility of officers to testify until the witness left the premises of the MACC.

MACC also have to develop aspects of physical security such as fencing equipment, installation of grille, security guards and CCTV equipment to ensure worker safety, as well as increasing equipment and logistics requirements in terms of computer facilities to the proposed construction of the complex aspects of the MACC to ensure comfort, security and confidentiality.

In addition, the MACC urged to improve and update the Standing Orders of the Commissioner-General of the handling procedures and signed a witness statement in accordance with the requirements of the investigation and review, review and adapt the procedure of examining witnesses, law enforcement agencies in countries like Hong Kong.

It also determines whether a witness who obtained permission to return home but choose to stay at the premises of the MACC is the responsibility of the MACC, assess the level of comfort and witnesses through the process of investigation at the premises of the MACC and logistics equipment review and evaluate the physical security of the premises of the MACC.

During the news conference after the ceremony, Mohd Noor declined to comment further on the inspection report of the investigation, the inquest respecting the death of Teoh case going on at this time.

Keeping costs down while offering motorists the latest intelligent transport solution was a key objective of the joint project.

Helping to make the roads safe for motorists was a powerful incentive in the introduction of a Wireless Networking Solution and the Motorola One Point Wireless Suite by the Department of Transport and Main Roads and Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) in Toowoomba.

What’s more, because traffic management systems rely on the network, it has to be up and running as close as possible to 100 per cent of the time, and there has been no outage since commissioning.

With Toowoomba, the gateway to central and outback Queensland, it is vital to keep all road users moving. Not only that, with a population over 100,000 and around 100 traffic intersections using 30 traffic monitoring cameras, the town has plenty of traffic management challenges.

Mr David Playford, traffic systems coordinator, Department of Transport and Main Roads in Toowoomba, is extremely pleased with the Motorola solution comprising Mesh, point to point and point to multi point technology, which connects to the STREAMS Traffic Management System in the Toowoomba area.

David said that he can sit at home, in the car or office and look for issues.

“For example, if we need to get the traffic lights to flash for emergency services co-ordination and provide free flowing traffic, it’s instant management. All without the cost of maintaining a continuous high bandwidth connection by alternate means.”

One of the other advantages is, as Toowoomba grows to maybe double the size, their communications backbone infrastructure can cope.

“We don’t have to upgrade to another system. We can keep adding devices for quite a long time. It’s a turnkey system which we don’t have to touch other than just buying an upgrade license.

“The response vehicles of the department can be monitored and tracked so that management can identify where any vehicle is at any time and because we have enabled communications and video, it’s possible to see the incident. We can react immediately, be connected and monitor the situation,” said David.

Variable Message Signs which operate to warn motorists of interruptions to traffic flow can be instantly programmed and monitored to ensure up to date information is being provided to all road users.

In the past it was a disparate system. Now it’s combined into one solution capable of managing any part of the portfolio.

“We liked the idea of dealing with Motorola as a proven supplier and we’ve found that their gear is extremely robust in noisy environments.”

David recalls old aircraft with Motorola radio equipment in them.

“Motorola have been in this business for a long time, and that’s comforting.

“We did initial trials over three years in Bundaberg, Cairns and Mt Isa but on a smaller scale, then in November 2009 it went 100 percent live. Bundaberg was used as ‘Proof of Concept’ site for Emergency Vehicle Progression. This system conditions traffic signals to turn green for approaching emergency vehicles, and it works. It’s all been presenting as a very stable and dependable wireless communications platform,” he said.

David was fulsome in his praise of the high value level of support provided by Motorola and the good relationship that has been strengthened due to hard work by the Motorola team.

Almost RM60million spent on CCTV cameras

PETALING JAYA: The Housing and Local Government Ministry has allocated almost RM60 million to install and manage 496 closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras in 25 local authority areas nationwide to reduce crime, Minister Datuk Chor Chee Heung said today.

He said the allocation was for a five-year period and all the CCTV cameras were expected to be installed by the end of August this year.

The locations of the CCTV cameras were selected based on information given by the police, he told reporters at his office here after chairing a meeting on his ministry's plans.

"Reducing crime is one of the National Key Results Areas (NKRAs) and the ministry has been given the responsibility of installing the CCTV cameras in the local authority hotspots nationwide," he said.

"If we can reduce crime in this way, then we will apply to the government to install more CCTV cameras next year," he added.

In the Klang Valley, 24 CCTV cameras each have been installed in Shah Alam, Ampang Jaya, Subang Jaya, Petaling Jaya and Selayang, and 16 each in Klang and Kajang.

KUALA LUMPUR: Ninety-six closedcircuit television cameras (CCTV) will be installed in Petaling Jaya by end of this year to curb crime especially involving school students.

Petaling Jaya deputy mayor Puasa Md Taib said so far 22 CCTVs have been installed and used in certain spots in the district.

"From the amount, another 24 units will be provided by the Federal government and 50 units will be supplied by the State government with the allocation of RM100,000 for maintaining the devices," said Puasa during the launch of "Crime Free Youth" campaign at PJ Civic Hall.

"Based on police data, we found the school students in this city are involved in petty theft and vehicle theft and Selangor has the most cases of juvenile crimes in Malaysia. So with the installation of the CCTV, they will think twice before committing crime."

The generation of a high quality image is decided by many factors including light source of the environment, lens,sensor, compression engine, etc. However, for camera itself, a lens is the most fundamental component that firstly decides if the output of the quality is good or not. In the security industry, because the use of camera differs, especially fixed type with C/CS mount, system installers themselves have to select and purchase a lens fitting their specific needs.

Focal Length

Focal length is the distance between the sensor and secondary principal point of the lens.

Figure 2.2 shows image distortion caused by a shorter focal length and the telephoto effect resulting from a longer focal length.

Lenses include the following types:

• Fixed lens: the focal length cannot be changed.

• Vari-focal lens: the focal length (field of view) can be manually adjusted;. The most common vari-focal

lens is 3.5 - 8 mm.

• Zoom lens: a kind of vari-focal lens with motorized mechanism to adjust its focal length. Generally, AF

(Auto Focus) algorithm is used to focus automatically.

Insecurity cams? About half in New York City don’t work !

NEW YORK — About half the 4,313 security cameras installed along New York City’s subways aren’t seeing a thing — a blind spot in the crime and terrorism safety net for the nation’s largest city.

“A lot of those cameras don’t work, and maybe someday we’re going to get very badly hurt because of it,” Mayor Michael Bloomberg said today.

While cameras are out of commission in the subway, the cash-strapped Metropolitan Transportation Authority has also been forced to cut the number of weekend police patrols on major bridges and tunnels.

The problem of missing video came to light after two men were stabbed to death on the subway — and there was no camera installed in the station to catch an image of the killer. Darnell Morel and Ricardo Williams, both 24, were killed in a fight that started around 5 a.m. Sunday at the Christopher Street station, about four miles from the World Trade Center site.

The New York Police Department says it doesn’t depend on the surveillance cameras set up by the MTA — instead, officers patrol the subways and set up random bag searches in stations around the city.

Overall, crime is down in the subways, even as ridership increases. In 1990, there were about 50 crimes a day reported in the subway, and now there are about five, according to police. About 5 million people ride the subway every day, around a million fewer than in the ’90s.

The NYPD is installing thousands of

cameras around the city and is using private surveillance installed in major buildings as part of a massive security initiative. In addition, 500 specialized cameras are in place — an image from one of those cameras led officers to a suspect wanted in the brutal assault of a woman in a bar a few weeks ago.

“As cameras proliferate, as we build more of them, they become more instrumental in solving crimes. they also act as a deterrent,” said Paul Browne, a Police Department spokesman.

But the MTA, which just last week approved $93 million in service cuts, is in charge of the cameras within the subway system. of the 4,313 cameras, 2,270 are working and 2,043 aren’t.

Some are under construction and the agency is working to bring them online — an additional 900 should be up by June, the agency says. some just plain don’t work because of heat, water or electrical problems. And about 1,000 are held up by litigation.

A division of Lockheed Martin hired to install the systems sued the MTA last year, blaming the agency for delays preventing them from meeting construction deadlines. the MTA countersued, saying that Lockheed Martin had provided faulty products. A Lockheed Martin spokesman would not comment today.

Meanwhile, about 600 agents stationed in the subways have been laid off as a result of the budget.

A working, comprehensive surveillance system for the city’s many bridges and automobile tunnels is monitored 24 hours a day. But some of the officers who regularly patrol the bridges — and who could respond to a threat within minutes — have been taken off weekend shifts at the Queens Midtown Tunnel and the Verazzano Narrows Bridge, which connects Brooklyn and Staten Island.

Greg Lombardi, vice president of the Bridge & Tunnel Officers Benevolent Association, said the cuts will make it more difficult to catch any miscreants.

“The Verazzano is a 2 1/2-mile long bridge. the monitoring system is on Staten Island. If an alarm goes off, or someone sees something, dispatching someone over to Brooklyn could mean the guy gets away,” he said.

The MTA said that the plan has been evolving since the Sept. 11 terrorist attack, and that additional funding will be made available to add more cameras in priority areas.

“The safety and security of our customers is the MTA’s top priority,” Kevin Ortiz, a spokesman for the MTA, said in a statement. “In a post-9/11 world we have worked together to harden our infrastructure, secure sensitive areas and prioritize locations for surveillance cameras.”

The mayor said today that he was concerned about security, and that the city government had a plan in place that would’ve given enough money to the agency to improve security, as well as quality — but that Albany didn’t agree.

“I think it’s fair to say the MTA does not have enough money to provide the level of security that people want and that we should have,” he said. “If we didn’t learn the need for security in the subway system time and time in the past, yesterday or the day before should have taught us again.”

Police increased their presence in the New York subway after the suicide attacks Monday in Moscow’s subway in the time before rush hour began. Police closely monitor crimes in other cities and adapt their own strategy as needed. After the 2005 bombing in London that killed more than 50 people, bag searches were instituted in the New York subway.

London, one of the most closely watched cities on Earth, is home to an estimated 500,000 cameras, including 10,000 operated by law enforcement agencies.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly has made it no secret that he would like more cameras in public spaces, including the subway system, bridges and tunnels and on city streets.

Mayor Bloomberg said he’s not afraid to ride but cited a recent suicide bomb plot by a militant linked to al-Qaida as a reason New Yorkers must remain vigilant. Afghan immigrant Najibullah Zazi pleaded guilty in February to plotting to carry out a suicide bombing in the subways.

“The whole plan there was to build some bombs and blow up the subway,” he said. “So, make no mistake about it, we have to work very hard to keep this subway system safe.”

What type of Operating System (OS) does the Security DVR use?

Most PC-based Security DVR Systems use Windows XP Professional, and Standalone Security DVRs are Linux based.

What kind of cable should I use?

Siamese cable, which is an RG59 coaxial cable and a pair of 18 gauge
wire for in the same jacket to make installation easy. Check out our

What happens if there is power outage?

Most Security DVRs will come back on as soon as power is restored.
However, we suggest an uninterruptable power supply (UPS) which
provides a short period of backup power and also serves as a surge
protection device.

Can the Security DVR report an alarm?

Yes, some Security DVRs have that option.
